Nahuel Huapi has four real seasons, and each one changes what you can do. The short answer: December to March for boat trips, hiking and long days; April and early May for autumn colours and fewer people; mid-June to September for skiing. Remember the seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere.
Temperatures below are approximate averages for Bariloche itself; the mountains are colder, and the west of the park (Puerto Blest, Tronador) is much wetter.

Summer: December to February — the main season
Days are long (sunset after 21:00 in January), warm in the sun and cool in the shade. Every boat trip and road is running, the refugios are open and the lakeside beaches fill up. It is also peak season for Argentine families: book boats, tours and hotels well ahead, especially in January.
Autumn: March to May — our favourite
March often has some of the most settled weather of the year and far fewer visitors. From April, the lenga and ñire forests turn red and gold — the Seven Lakes Road and the slopes of Cerro Catedral are spectacular. Days shorten and cool quickly by May, when some seasonal services wind down.
Winter: June to September — the ski season
Most of the year’s rain and snow falls between May and August. The ski season at Cerro Catedral typically runs from mid-June to late September, snow permitting. July brings the Argentine and Brazilian winter school holidays — the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year. Late August and September often combine good snow with thinner crowds. The Tronador road usually closes in winter.
Spring: October and November — quiet and green
Spring is windy and changeable, but prices are lower and the forests are fresh and green. Higher trails may still hold snow until late November or December; lower walks, boat trips and the Circuito Chico are all excellent.
When to avoid
- July, if you do not ski. Crowds and prices peak and many days are grey.
- Mid-January without a booking. Hotels and boat trips sell out.
- Late May and June for hiking. Short days, rain and early snow close the high trails.
