Cerro Catedral

South America’s great ski mountain

Cerro Catedral takes its name from the granite spires along its summit ridge, which reminded early climbers of Gothic cathedral towers. Since the 1940s it has been Argentina’s signature ski mountain, and today it is one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Hemisphere, with dozens of lifts and runs above Lago Gutiérrez, 19 km from central Bariloche.

In winter it is the reason Bariloche fills up with Brazilian and Argentine skiers; in summer the lifts carry walkers towards the ridge, and the base at Villa Catedral is the trailhead for Refugio Frey. See ski lessons and snow days.

Top things to do at Cerro Catedral

Ski or snowboard

The season typically runs from mid-June to late September, snow permitting. The mountain suits every level, with long cruising runs and views over the lakes; July school holidays are the busiest weeks.

A first day on snow

Packaged “snow baptism” days include transfer, pass, gear and a class — ideal if you have never skied. Book ahead for July.

Summer lifts and ridge walks

In summer some lifts run for sightseers, and hikers can follow the ridge towards Refugio Lynch and the spires for tremendous lake views.

Hike to Refugio Frey

From the base a well-marked trail climbs to the Frey hut in roughly 3–4 hours — see our refugios guide.

How to get to Cerro Catedral

  • By bus: line 55 runs from the centre to the base in about 35–40 minutes.
  • By car: 19–20 km via Avenida de los Pioneros or Bustillo; parking is paid and fills early on powder days.
  • Ski transfers: many hotels and tour operators run daily transfers in season.

Insider tips

  • Avoid the July winter-holiday weeks if you can; late August and September often have good snow and fewer people.
  • Rent gear in town the evening before to skip the morning queues at the base.
  • Weather changes fast; goggles and a neck warmer are essential in wind.
  • Check the resort’s official site for the current season opening date and lift-pass prices.
